This 22 hectare estate is spread across 32 plots between the villages of Baños de Ebroand Abalos. Artuke are one of the smallest and most carefully run wineries in the district, employing biodynamic techniques in the vineyards, recovering old plots and vinifying their wines to express the fruit over cellar techniques. The first two wines in the range are ‘village’ wines from Baños de Ebro and Ábalos respectively, followed by two single vineyard wines at the higher end of the range. The restrained use of oak and inclination towards different types/sizes of barrel, plus an unwillingness to adhere to the subscribed regimes for classification means that Artuke are precluded from using Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva designations on their wines. Carbonic is unoaked, Pies Negros is aged for 12 months in a foudre, Finca de los Locos is aged for 16 months in 500lt French oak and K4 is 15 months in 500lt French oak with a little more new oak than for the Finca. This is one of the most exciting new wave wineries in Rioja having recently picked up great reviews across a variety of publications on both sides of the Atlantic.
