Steve Lagier and Carole Meredith first moved to their property high up on Mount Veeder, Napa in 1986. Both have pedigree in wine, Steve having made wine for Mondavi for 14 years and Carole as a professor in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis. Her research group used DNA typingmethods to discover the origins of some of the greatest old wine varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah, and most recently Zinfandel. After many years preparing the ground for planting vines, Carole and Steve made their first commercial vintage in 2000. Still the vineyard occupies only a small part of their 84 acre property, with the rest left to native woodland and wildlife. The winery specialises in Syrah which comes in a perfumed, brooding and structured style (depending on the vintage) and the regime here is for minimal oaking (no new oak at all) and no other inputs than a small amount of sulphur.
