The Sampler is an independent wine shop where you can browse and buy from a selection of more than 900 classic, interesting, and unusual wines from all across the world. But as the names suggests, at our wine shop, 80 of these wines will be available to sample at any time. Be it an inexpensive Chardonnay from Australia, or a bottle of Château Latour, we hope you will find (and taste!) what you are looking for.
At The Sampler you can browse (and taste) at your own pace without interference from others and with no prior wine knowledge needed. Of course if you would like some advice then our knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to answer any questions or make recommendations.
The Islington shop was opened by Dawn and Jamie in December 2006 although the planning took almost two years of travelling and tasting across the wine world (harder than you think!). Other members of staff you may meet if you visit are Sebastien, Chloe and Hariet.
Being a very new local business we are keen to hear from our customers. If you have any suggestions for additions to our wine list or have wines that you would like to be put onto sampling or indeed, any other views, questions, suggestions – then please call or contact us.

Interested in rare and unusual wines? Bored of choosing the same wines from the shelf and keen to try something different? Why not join our Samplers Club to receive a mixed case on a regular basis.
Quarterly Membership
We will hand select a mixed case of 12 delicious wines from around the world (six red, five white, one sparkling) for which there are two membership levels – classic (£150 case) or deluxe (£300 case).
Monthly Membership
Choose to be a monthly member and receive a mixed six bottle case at the beginning of each month. The classic selection is available at £75 or treat yourself with our deluxe selection at £150.
The selection of wines in your case will represent at least a 10% discount to the retail value in store and your case can be delivered direct to your home (according to our usual delivery policy).
Details of the wines selected for inclusion in each case will be displayed on the website at least two weeks before the expected delivery date – or if you prefer, don’t peek and it can remain a tantilising surprise! If at any point you wish to cancel your membership or miss one delivery then you are under no obligation – just email or telephone us.

Delivery & Mail Order
We deliver 12 bottle cases to the local area free of charge and we can usually deliver within 24 hours, and at an agreed time.
Delivery to other parts of London is £10 per 12 bottle case and can take up to 3 days. Delivery outside of London is £20 per case of 12. Delivery of less or more than a 12 bottle case will be at cost price - please call for details.
If you are unable to visit our shop then we are happy to take orders via email or telephone and can arrange for delivery as above.

We can arrange delivery or recommend a reliable freight forwarder for most overseas markets.

266 Upper Street is easily accessible from Highbury and Islington tube (Victoria Line and British Rail), Angel Tube (Northern Line), and Essex Road (British Rail).
From Highbury and Islington tube, turn right out of the station and walk down Upper Street for about 200 yards. The Sampler is on the left hand side of Upper Street on the same block as Bang and Olufsen.
From Angel Tube, turn right out of the station and walk towards Ilsington green. Continue on up Upper Street - The Sampler is about 500 yards up on the right hand side (past the petrol station and fire brigade).

If you visit us at the weekend then you are likely to meet Ivy, our shop dog. Ivy is a very friendly border collie whom we adopted from a farm whilst on Christmas holidays to our home town in Northern Ireland back in 2000. At the time, Foot & Mouth was destroying Irish farming and the need for border collies as sheep dogs was low. There were lots of puppies looking for a home and as you can see she was such a cute little puppy that we had to bring her home.
Ivy is a very socialable dog and loves to meet all our customers. She already has a fan base amongst the younger community of Islington. Her favourite things are drinking Guinness, catching frisbees and licking customers hello.
Whilst she may look calm and serene, let her loose on Clapham Common and her excitement can hardly be contained. She is one of life’s enthusiasts and really enjoys learning new tricks and showing them off. Here’s one of her greatest moments – catching frisbees whilst twisting in the air.
