Markokitvis Xinamavro 2012
Xinomavro is a Greek grape variety predominant in Northern Greece. If pressed for a comparison, we would say it is like a Barolo—with lots of red berry fruit, a hint of flowers, high acidity and the tannic structure you would associate with nebbiolo. Marco is the third generation of winemakers at Markovitis winery, formerly Chateau Pegasus, the first producer in Greece to be certified organic. Xianomavro can produce a grunty tannic wine in its youth, but with age the wines acquire a fragrant lift and develop complex earthy notes, not unlike Pinot Noir. Really interesting - bright, crunchy red fruit mingle with rich notes of black olives and spice.
