Moulin Touchais 1968
Moulin Touchais is a grand old estate from the Coteaux du Layon region of the Loire and they are renowned for the ageing ability and quality of the sweet Chenin Blancs. The Domaine was founded in 1787, and has remained in the family ever since, making some of the most traditional wines in the Loire. Typically, the wines all contain between 70 and 80 grams of residual sugar and only really come into their own after two decades in bottle which is why they only release their wines after 10 years of cellaring! The incredible ageability of the wines is partly due to their harvesting methods - 20% of grapes are harvested slightly early to retain a vibrant acidity as a balance against the sweetness of the remaining grapes.
This gives similarly old Sauternes an easy run for its money, retaining that amazing acidity. Savoury, with burnt caramel and walnut notes. At 50 years old this is mature yet still vividly alive and graceful.
