Hiyu The May NV
What Nate Ready and China Tresemer are doing on the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon is unique in modern viticulture and we feel privileged that they have chosen to work with us in the UK. Hiyu consists of 12-hectares situated on the South side of the Columbia River Gorge along the Hood River tributary in Oregon. Nate and China have created a farm inspired by biodynamic, organic and permaculture farming practises. Only 5.5 hectares are planted to vines with the rest a mixture of vegetable gardens, forest, ponds and space for the rearing of all kinds of animals. Farming here is without the use of any chemical inputs and excludes even the use of copper sulphate. All work is done with the aim of creating a naturally healthy and self-sustaining environment.
Nate: "This is the first release from what is currently a four vintage (13-16) solera of super long macerated (90-120 days) Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from the original 2.5 acre parcel at the top of the hill. This wine is 100% whole cluster and 25-30% pinot gris. It spends the coldest moments of the winter in the fermenter and we press when the snow melts and temperatures begin to rise in the spring. This is one of the first wines we made on the farm and emerged from a desire to unlock aromatic and textural dimensions that have been lost in modern Pinot Noir. The wines has more in common with traditional Barolo and shows a beautiful woodsy, honeyed, nutty patina from its long time in barrel."
