Poe Sparkling Pinot Noir & Meunier 2014
Poe is one of our favourite estates - they make really expressive and well balanced single vineyard Chardonnays and Pinots in California. Samantha Sheehan only founded the winery in 2009, after feeling inspired when she tasted her way around Burgundy and Champagne. What we love about the estate is that they don't try and copy Burgundy in California, but instead really express the local terroir in a very restrained, elegant way. Wine making is done with minimal intervention, with no additives and very low sulphur - the Manchester Ridge Pinot Noir is even foot trodden for extra gentle extraction. The reds in particular, while drinking now will age beautifully for at least seven years. These wines are made to last, and will gain a gorgeous savoury complexity with time.
This is a traditionial method sparkling rose made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and has a lovely delicate mousse, with bright raspberry and strawberry aromas and a touch of slatey minerality on the finish. Underlined with a creamy, toasty texture from extensive bottle ageing. Really interesting, and you should try it!
