Bibi Graetz Soffocone 2016
A really characterful and lively red from Tuscany, made by one of the most characterful and lively wine producers of the region! The Soffocone is Sangiovese, with a small amount of Canaiolo and Colorino. It is fermented in stainless steel and spent 18 months in used French oak. Rich cherry and blackberry with an underlying savoury edge that is classic Sangiovese. Really bright, but still elegant, which is Graetz’s style.
Bibi Graetz is an art graduate (he does the labels) who grew up in a huge castle, where he still lives, in Castello di Vincigliata, Fiesole in Tuscany. In 2000 he started making wines from his parents small property. He got the wine bug and (his parents must have been delighted!) and started looking for old parcels around Chianto Classico with his friend, wine consultant Alberto Antonini, who was winemaker at Antinori. Most of the vines for his wines today come from Fiesole (just outside the Florence city limits) and from around the Giglio island just off the Tuscan coast. His top wine Testamatta is one of the best Sangiovese around, but his more everyday wines really highlight the fresh, bright, elegant style of wine he loves making.
