Saffirio Barolo Millenovecento48 Riserva 2013
Another estate Matt picked up on his recent Piemonte trip, and we are delighted to have scooped these guys up. Josetta Saffirio is a quality obsessed, top Piemonte producer who makes small quantities of top Barolo among other things. She’s biodynamic, and also has a sense of fun and curiosity about her, so she decided to make a sparkling Nebbiolo.
Copyright Jancis Robinson: "Monforte d’Alba. Transparent, like a thin curve of ruby stained glass. Smells like an old church: of cold flagstones, incense hanging in the century-old dust motes as the light shafts fall through high windows, dried petals. On the palate, redcurrants steeped in oolong tea with a hint of mace, a fine but dry network of tannins. It’s a wine that seems on first approach to be somewhat cold, virtuously judgmental of excess – but over a night or two, with food, there is real loveliness there. It rewards patience, good food, thoughtfulness."
