Varnier-Fanniere Zéro Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV
Grower Champagne – small producers, superb quality, great value
The Fannière family have been growing vines in the Côtes des Blancs subregion of Champagne since 1860. They now have 4ha of vineyards spread across 4 Grand Cru villages - Avize, Oiry, Oger and Cramant. As the name suggests, the Côte des Blancs is renowned for producing Chardonnay on its chalky soils. Denis Varnier is the current vigneron at the domaine. He strongly believes in the importance of old vines in making Champagne - in his opinion younger vines produce Champagnes of less intensity and flavour. All of the vines used in the Varnier-Fannière range are at least 30 years old, and for the top Cuvee St Denis and Vintage Champagnes vines of approximately 60 years old are used.
A small amount of the Brut is bottled with zero dosage – giving a much steelier, racier wine than the standard brut. Great with sushi.
