Berberana Gran Reserva 1950 Sadly, with the exception of Lopez de Heredia, they don’t make wine like this any more in Rioja, with the traditions of decades of ageing in old American oak giving way to short periods in new French oak (which ironically makes the wines more oaky!). Here we have one of the larger producers in a great vintage for rioja. What is amazing about this wine is how young it tastes - Riojas will outlive any other red wine.
Surprisingly still a strong mahogany colour. Slightly oxidative, very complex nose with clove, tar, bergamot, leather and blackberry. Medium bodied, restrained flavours in the mouth of brambly fruit, underbrush and leather. Delicate tannins on the finish, which fades slowly. Very special, proudly old fashioned and subtle wine.
