Bernabe Beryna Seleccion 2005 Alicante is not a wine-producing region of Spain you often hear of—being overshadowed by neighbouring Jumilla and Yecla. But here at The Sampler we like hunting out new and exciting wines and were bowled over when we first tasted the Beryna wines. Bernabe Navarro specialises in Monastrell, but also grow Tempranillo, Cabernet and Syrah at altitudes of 550m which helps to off-set the extreme heat in this part of Spain.
The Seleccion is a blend of 50% Monastrell, 40% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 18 months in new French oak. Modern Spanish—full and fruity but not overblown in any way, this is actually nicely restrained. Sure to be a new favourite.
Grapes: Monastrell, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon
