Rijks Estate Chardonnay 07

Our South African range has been looking a bit sad for a while, but we’ve recently spent a lot of time hunting out new gems—and this is the first of them. Rijk’s estate is a boutique winery based in Tulbagh—a lesser known region just north of Stellenbosch. This Chardonnay was barrel fermented in 80% new French oak barrels and then aged on its lees for 11 months before bottling.

This is not a New World oak bomb—instead here the oak just supports the core of zingy fruit and adds extra layers of spice and a nutty complexity. Really very fine, this is an elegant wine and will surely evolve in the bottle for a few years - if you can stop yourself drinking it!
