Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay 07 Hyde de Villaine is a joint project between Larry Hyde, of Hyde vineyards in Carneros and Aubert de Villaine of legendary Domaine de la Romanée Conti in Burgundy. Their aim is to change perceptions of Californian wine, creating a more elegant, restrained style of wine. This is from the cool climate region of Carneros—Napa’s best region for Chardonnay.
This is clearly a Californian Chardonnay with the classic ripe fruit and pineapple notes, but has much more restraint and minerality than many. There are very well integrated oak flavours that in no way overpower the wine—rather they just act to support the fruit flavours and add a lovely smoky complexity. A really great Californian Chardonnay that seems to combine the best of the old and new worlds.
