Bongran Botrytis 2001 We are pretty excited about this organic domaine. Jean Thevenet’s story is one of endless battles against the local authorities in the Maconnais region of Viré Clessé. Basically, the authorities have at times tried to chuck him out of the appellation where his vines grow. Why? Because they are weird – he harvests by hand very late, uses no chemicals in the viticulture and actively encourages noble rot in chardonnay.
Classic botrytis notes of honey, apricot, quince and some lemon zest character. The palate is clean and elegant with a suggestion of lemon curd and honey. Balanced, non-cloying with a relatively light nody and a mineral note on the finish.
Grape: Chardonnay
