First Drop Mere et Fils 2009 We have stocked First Drop’s red wines for a few months now and they have been a big hit. So we were very excited to hear they had made a Chardonnay too, from the cool Adelaide Hills region. First glance at the label might not reveal their trademark crazy style—but look further and spot ’Appellation non Controlee’ and you’ll begin to see the subtle humour. The Franglaise on the tasting sheet says that this is aged in oak—’tete de hog Francais, naturellement mon colonel’. Of course.
As they say, this is ‘un vin restrained’. It has a definite nod to the French elegant, mineral style—but with that classic sunny fruit to back up the nutty oak flavours.
