Olivier Horiot Rose de Riceys En Barmont 2006
Rose de Riceys is an exception to the norm in Champagne. They are made from Pinot Noir, at the far southern end of Champagne. This style of wine is achieved by using grapes planted on the best of the south-facing slopes around Riceys, employing the saignee rose technique. The wines start with about 10% of the grapes that are foot-trodden, then whole bunches are added. Macerations usually last 5-6 days. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration.
This is from the Barmont plot as opposed to Valingrain. They are interestingly different, the Barmont being more masculine, fuller with darker fruit and more tannins (a rose with tannins?!) What an amazing/interesting/exciting/glorious wine!
