Hiyu Falcon Box 2016
What Nate Ready and China Tresemer are doing on the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon is unique in modern viticulture and we feel privileged that they have chosen to work with us in the UK. Hiyu consists of 12-hectares situated on the South side of the Columbia River Gorge along the Hood River tributary in Oregon. Nate and China have created a farm inspired by biodynamic, organic and permaculture farming practises as well as the teachings of the Japanese agricultural philosopher Masanoba Fukuoka. Only 5.5 hectares are planted to vines with the rest a mixture of vegetable gardens, forest, ponds and space for the rearing of all kinds of animals. Farming here is without the use of any chemical inputs and excludes even the use of copper sulphate. All work is done with the aim of creating a naturally healthy and self-sustaining environment.
Nate:"The Falcon Box is made from a one acre parcel just North of the white barn at Hiyu. It is planted to a field blend of white and red grapes of Burgundian origin. All the fruit is picked together and basket pressed directly into Stockinger Demi Muid's for fermentation and aging. Its an alpine wine with the power and swelling richness of chardonnay, the breed and precision of Aligoté and Pinot Blanc, the exotic red essences of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Pinot Gris and the salinity of Melon de Bourgogne. Its a chameleon and at moments can remind one of Belluards Gringet based wines from the Savoie, Huet’s Chenin’s or the incredibly focused Meursault’s of Arnaud Ente. 117 Cases Produced”
