Piombaia Brunello di Montalcino 2016
The estate was founded in the 50s, by the Rossi - Cantini family. Today Francesco Cantini is the wine maker here, and it was his passion for sustainability that made the estate convert to biodynamics in 2009. The estate has 210 hectares of land, with the best 12 hectares being dedicated to vineyards. They are also a working farm, so the rest is planted with olive groves and cereal crops. These 12 hectares are further divided into single hectare plots, so that each plot can be managed and harvested separately. The vineyards are situated at 400- 600 metres of altitude, which is pretty high for Montalcino, and gives the wines an elegant freshness which we love.
The Brunello is aged for 3 years in mainly Slovenian oak, with the remainder in large French oak. This adds a gentle spicy edge rather than a slathering of sweet vanilla.
Precise and ethereal, with bright sour cherry and red plum notes underpinned by a layered, savoury foresty mid-palate. The vibrant acidity with a touch of floral minerality adds beautiful freshness and elegance to it. While this is still very recognisably Brunello it's also one of the most fine and elegant expressions we've come across. Definitely a must try!
